Intune Training: Windows 10 Feature Updates
Introduction
Let’s discuss the importance of Windows 10 feature updates and how they can be effectively managed using Intune. In an Intune environment, task sequences are not available, so we need to find alternative methods to maintain device updates. This is where feature updates come in. In this blog, we will explore the settings for Windows 10 feature updates that exist in Intune and how they can be configured to ensure smooth deployment.
Setting Up Feature Updates
In the previous video, we discussed setting up software updates policies in Intune, including creating a Windows 10 update ring. Now, there is a new option available in Intune for Windows 10 feature updates. To begin, navigate to the software updates policies section in Intune and select the Windows 10 feature updates preview option. This new option allows you to configure feature updates for specific groups in your organization.
Configuring Feature Update Policies
To configure feature update policies, create a new profile and give it a logical name, such as “Pilot Group.” Select the desired version of Windows 10, such as from 1803 to 1909. It is important not to include a version number in the profile name to ensure easy updates in the future. Once the profile is created, select the target group for deployment. Ideally, you should have a pilot group in your environment to test the feature updates before deploying them widely. However, in our test tenant, we will select any device with any group for demonstration purposes.
Update Ring Settings
After configuring the feature update profile, navigate to the update ring settings. Here, you will need to make a few changes. First, change the feature update deferral period from 30 days to zero. This ensures that the feature update policy manages the updates instead of the current policy. Additionally, make sure to select the appropriate version of the Windows 10 channel. For example, if you are running 1903 or later, select the Semi-Annual Channel. It is also recommended to review the information provided on the Microsoft Intune website for Windows 10 feature updates.
Benefits of Feature Update Policies
By implementing feature update policies in Intune, you gain greater control over the versions of Windows 10 deployed in your organization. Unlike previous methods, feature updates allow you to set a baseline for your devices and ensure they stay on a specific version for as long as you need. This prevents automatic updates that may not align with your organization’s requirements. Additionally, with the new autopilot deployment option, you can target policies specifically to autopilot registered devices, improving the user experience and reducing downtime during updates.
Managing Multiple Update Rings
In larger organizations, it is common to have multiple update rings to accommodate different groups and testing phases. With feature update policies, managing multiple rings becomes easier. Simply create a profile for each update ring and configure the desired version of Windows 10. As each ring completes the update process, you can easily update the policy to switch to the next version, without the need to create new profiles.
Conclusion
Windows 10 feature updates are a critical aspect of maintaining device security and performance. With Intune, managing feature updates becomes streamlined and efficient. By configuring feature update policies, you can ensure that your devices stay up to date with the latest versions of Windows 10, while maintaining control over the update process. Remember to regularly check the Microsoft Intune website for updates and new features. Happy updating!
