Intune Training: How to Rename a Device in Microsoft Intune
Introduction
Welcome to this blog post where we will discuss the steps on how to rename a device in Microsoft Intune. Renaming a device in Intune is a simple process that allows you to assign a new name to a device enrolled in Microsoft Intune. By renaming the device, its name will be changed both in Intune and on the device itself.
Why Rename a Device?
There are several reasons why you might want to rename a device in Microsoft Intune. One common scenario is when you have a Windows device with a default name consisting of random alphabets and numbers. Renaming the device to something meaningful can make it easier to identify. Another scenario is when you have used Autopilot on your machines, which provides default names to all the machines based on the configuration in the Autopilot profile. In such cases, you might want to set a different name on a few machines to easily distinguish them.
Steps to Rename a Device
Let’s now dive into the steps to rename a device in Microsoft Intune.
Step 1: Access Microsoft Endpoint Manager Admin Center
To begin, you need to access and log in to the Microsoft Endpoint Manager Admin Center. You can do this by visiting the URL https://endpoint.microsoft.com. Once logged in, click on “Devices” and then select “All Devices”.
Step 2: Select the Device to Rename
In the list of all devices, locate the device that you want to rename. In this example, we will select a Windows 10 device with the default name “Desktop – Random Alphabets and Numbers”. Click on the device name to proceed.
Step 3: Rename the Device
There are two ways to rename a device in Microsoft Intune.
Option 1: Under the “Manage” tab, click on “Properties”. Here, you will find an option to rename the device.
Option 2: On the “Overview” tab, click on the three dots (…) and select “Rename Device”. This will open the same option in the “Rename Device” blade.
In the text box, enter the new name that you want to assign to the device. Make sure to follow the guideline provided, which allows the use of letters, numbers, and hyphens. No spaces or special characters are allowed.
For example, let’s say we want to rename the device to “Lab Win10 – PC01”. Once you have entered the new name, you can choose whether or not to restart the device after renaming. Select “Yes” if you want the device to restart automatically, or select “No” to skip the restart and manually restart the device later.
After entering the new name and selecting the restart option, click on “Rename”. A confirmation message will appear, indicating that the restart has been initiated and the device rename action is pending.
Step 4: Check the Rename Status
To check the status of the rename device action, you can go back to the Windows 10 device. Right-click on the Start button, select “System”, and you will see the current device name. In a few minutes, you will also see a pop-up message box notifying you about the restart. Alternatively, you can perform a manual synchronization with Intune to see the changes immediately.
Step 5: Verify the Device Name
After the device has restarted, you can verify the new device name. Right-click on the Start button, select “System”, and you will see both the old and new device names. In our example, the new name “Lab Win10 – PC01” will be displayed. Congratulations! You have successfully renamed a device using Microsoft Endpoint Manager Admin Center.
Conclusion
Renaming a device in Microsoft Intune is a straightforward process that can be done through the Microsoft Endpoint Manager Admin Center. By following the steps outlined in this blog post, you can easily assign a new name to a device and make it easier to identify within your organization.
